– Workshops often take place in our temporary exhibition space. Please check our public Google Calendar or call the Museum on 020 8332 1141, or email info@museumofrichmond.com to see if a workshop is taking place when you plan to visit that may limit your access to the exhibition – especially if you are making a journey especially to see the exhibition. We don’t want you to be disappointed or frustrated when you arrive!
– We occasionally have to close at short notice due to volunteer illness. Please check here or our public Google Calendar for latest news and updates.
– At present there is no step free access from street level to the Ground Floor of the Old Town Hall whilst we wait for Richmond Council to repair the lift at the Disabled Entrance. We apologise for the inconvenience this causes while we wait for the Council to carry out these repairs. If this means you are unable to visit the Museum, you can make a complaint to the Council here: https://richmond.gov.uk/make_a_complaint
– To help you plan your visit, we have developed some Visual Stories and Sensory Maps, which you can download below. They have been designed specifically to help visitors who are neurodiverse, have additional needs, and/or have disabilities. If you have any feedback on how these guides could be improved, please let us know!
Getting to the Museum by Car
Easy access by car via the M3 – come off onto the A316, take the first exit at St Margaret’s roundabout onto the A3004 and follow the road until you cross Richmond Bridge. Turn left onto Hill Street and the Old Town Hall is on your left on Whittaker Avenue.
Parking available nearby at Friar’s Lane Car Park, Richmond Riverside Car Park and Paradise Road Car Park.
Please note that all of these car parks do have charges.
Getting to the Museum by Public Transport
We are easy to get to by underground, rail or bus:
Rail: direct from Waterloo to Richmond Station. The Museum is a 10 minute walk from the Station.
Underground: District Line, London Overground at Richmond Station, The Museum is a 10 minute walk from the Station.
Bus: H22, 33, H37, 65, R68, 190, 290, 371, 490.
Look out for directional signposts from Richmond Station, the Green, and the Riverside.
Toilets in The Old Town Hall
– There are 2 public toilets in the Old Town Hall
– One is by the Disabled Entrance on Whittaker Avenue. This is the Accessible Toilet.
– The other toilet is on the 1st floor, by the stairs up to the Museum.
– Richmond Council is responsible for the maintenance of these toilets, as they own the Old Town Hall. The Museum is an independent charity that rents the museum space from them. If you find the toilet in an unacceptable condition, you can make a complaint to the Council here: https://richmond.gov.uk/make_a_complaint
Baby Changing in The Old Town Hall
– On the door to the Accessible toilet it says there are baby changing facilities.
– There are no baby changing in this toilet, even though it says so on the door.
– In the Museum, we have a Little Visitor Toilet Kit which you can use in the toilet on the 1st Floor, as we understand that the Baby Changing facilities are far from ideal.
– We have a changing mat and supply of wipes you can use in the Museum’s work room. We do not have any nappy bins, so please take the soiled nappy home with you – thank you!
– We also have stools for toddlers to use in the public toilet, as well as ear defenders and kitchen roll for those who get overwhelmed by noisy hand driers.

– We welcome visitors with disabilities and additional needs, and we will do all that we can to help you before and during your visit.
– We are committed to developing and promoting inclusive access to the museum.

The answers to questions we are asked the most:

– Once you are in the Museum, there are no steps or ramps. It is on one level.
– There are seats in the centre of each of the main areas of the galleries. You are more than welcome to move them as you need to.
– We welcome assistance dogs, including emotional support dogs.

We also have a bag of ‘Sensory Supplies’ available for visitors to use. If any visitors, of any age, find themselves becoming over stimulated or overwhelmed, we have some bits and pieces to help you calm, ground and recentre yourselves, including:
