Trading in Human Lives - the Richmond Connection
March 25th 2007 is the bicentenary of the Act of Parliament that abolished the Slave Trade in the British Colonies and made it illegal to carry slaves in British ships. To commemorate this important anniversary, the Museum of Richmond is mounting an exhibition, Trading in Human Lives - the Richmond Connection.
The exhibition examines the origins of the slave trade, Richmond people involved in the trade and its abolition, and the presence of black people in Richmond in the eighteenth century as a result of the trade.
It is brought up to date by a current evaluation of the slave trade and an examination of the slave forts on the coast of Ghana and how they are presented and interpreted today.
There is a full education programme to accompany the exhibition, and an illustrated talk on 16th April 2007.
