| Education Otherwise at the Museum of Richmond |
 Who would think that one might go to a museum to learn maths? A new departure for the Museum of Richmond is a project in partnership with Education Otherwise, the association for families who are teaching their children at home.  So far, this has involved three enjoyable teaching sessions using the Museum and its collection as the material for exploring history, and even maths, as well as providing an opportunity for these sometimes isolated children to meet and learn to get on with one another. Children of ages from 6 to 12 together, with their parents there to help, had fun practising tallying and drawing the exhibits, and, as the picture shows, learning about grids and how a grid system enables the museum staff to locate all the thousands of objects in their collection store. The combination of fun and learning from real objects their great-grandparents could have used makes the lessons memorable, and thanks are due to the Thames Community Foundation whose grant made the project possible. |
